there was an incident today at red apple

melissafengshui:

and i can’t stop thinking about what happened and self-reflecting on what i thought at the time.

to keep things short, i saw two people running away from someone who seemed to be chasing after them.

at the time i didn’t know the details of what happened but i immediately assumed that the chase-ees where in danger because of the chaser. like the chaser was the cause of the problem or like they assaulted the other two people. which is all fine and dandy (not really), but i don’t know if that’s the reason why i thought that or if it’s because of the chaser’s ethnicity.

in the end it was just a big misunderstanding of what i thought was really happening. but still…

i mean, i shouldn’t think that me looking at ethnicity is a problem since some of the closest people to me are of that ethnicity. when i look at people i don’t really care what their ethnicity is but i just kept questioning myself why? why did i think that? was that even what i thought? or was it really just because it i feel like the people who run away are the victims and the chaser is the assaulter. this is going no where, but i just had to share it. it made and still is making me feel yucky.

It happens to everyone, being prejudice is a part of being a human. We as humans are meant to judge things by the looks of it because of recognition, safety, and other instincts tell us to; we see differences. But with society and especially if you were raised by parents by the older, not so kind-equality for all generation, this pre-judging and stereotyping by ethnicity gets imprinted in our head. You already took the first step of cleansing this “imprint” by recognizing what you are assuming is not a right way to think and see people. It takes time and practice to undo prejudice just like how it took time for you to think that way— you probably didn’t come out the womb thinking like that. So be patient and check yourself when you think this is occurring.
